EVO 2013 Super Smash Bros. Melee Finals

March 2 2014 , Written by Jennifer

Quite possibly the winner of EVO 2013, Super Smash Bros. Melee earned the right to be hosted with the other fighting games during the finals. Raking in more than 130,000 views on live stream, this final broke the record for most views of any final in EVO history. And boy was it a sight to be seen!

Although it has been a while since Melee was in the major competitive scene, it definitely had the support from both the fans at EVO and outside of EVO.

Like many of the other games, there were crowd favorites that got the loudest cheers. For Melee, the favorite was Wobblez and his Ice Climbers. It was fascinating to see him maneuver not one, but two characters at the same time. Going up against opponents like Dr. PeePee's Falco and Hungrybox's Jigglypuff did make him sweat a little, but he was able to emerge victorious and face Mango in the grand finals.

Mango himself had to work his way up the ranks to the grand finals. He was doing quite well as Fox against Hungrybox in one game, getting the crowd to cheer 'Four stock! Four stock!' when he almost knocked Hungrybox out without sacrificing any stock.

It would have been a shutout round, but he did lose one stock. However, that didn't stop the crowd though, and they quickly changed to 'Three stock! Three stock!' After the win against the pink marshmallow Jigglypuff, Mango's Fox McCloud was ready to take on Wobblez's Ice Climbers in the grand finals.

There seemed to be a theme going on during the Sunday showcase, because this grand finals had an uphill battle from the loser's bracket victory. Mango was able to claim victory on the first three sets, resetting the bracket and taking it to the Grand Finals for the crown. Fox was doing well and, although he lost one set against the Ice climbers, he was able to take the three set victory. Mango was crowned champion of the Super Smash Bros. Melee competition at EVO 2013.

Melee has grown on me after this year's EVO and I look forward to its hopeful return next year.
